Thanks, Peg! A couple of my friends really liked Pimsleur too. Your thoughts on Rosetta Stone are helpful. BTW, I'm no spring chicken either and I find I have to work a little harder to remember things, by reviewing more often than when I was 25 and living in Spain. Knowing what I know now, I'd have worked a little harder on my Spanish then!

I have used several programs for learning Spanish and really liked the Pimsleur method. I learned a lot of the basics from it and would recommend it for someone who didn't know any Spanish. But then I tried Rosetta Stone. I'm almost finished with it and have learned less common words. I'd say that if a person wanted to use Rosetta Stone, they should know a little Spanish first. I'm impress with Rosetta Stone because it teaches a lot more than the basics. It seems easy for me with so much repetition, which I need. I don't like to spend time memorizing tenses and this method doesn't call for that. However, I also don't 'get' some of the more complicated sentences. I can communicate more with Spanish speakers since starting the course and am glad I purchased it. By the way, I'm 60 years old and always thought I couldn't learn another language.

Jimmy, I edited your comments down a little but think I have the gist of them. I would add that we all have different learning styles, and for many people RS works. I didn't care for it either, but I really like a program that explains things to me in English.

Rosetta Stone didn't work for us and when I went to sell it to get my investment back, Rosetta Stone threatened legal actions for copyright violation. With Rosetta Stone and unlike all other licensed software...you buy it and it's yours forever!!! ..... Don't buy Rosetta Stone. it simply doesn't work!!!

The main problem with Rosetta Stone is that it's really limited. I do like that it's set up around sentences (how else are you going to learn, out of context?), but like you said: there's no English help at all. At times this may confuse the learner which is real poison in the long run.

And although I'm not a grammar freak, you certainly need to know many Spanish tenses (wherever you're aware or not, you need them). Well, with Rosetta Stone you'll never ever learn them. I'm not even sure if the past tenses are covered! So no, don't rely on this thing. If you're really visual oriented: get a nice telenovela and you'll get a lot more bang for your buck.
