How DO We Learn Spanish?

“I could never live in Mexico like you do,” a good friend in the US said to me on the phone the other day. “I am no good at languages.”

I didn’t contradict her at the time, but I thought to myself that she was wrong… and that I was creating this website for people exactly like her.

Many of us took language courses back in high school or college… but those courses used methods that do not focus on being able to converse or get around in a foreign country. So when we couldn’t really speak the language, we concluded that our learning abilities were the problem.

But we just hadn’t had the right training for the task.

So.. what is the right training if you want to learn to SPEAK Spanish?

This website is an exploration of exactly that topic. In a nutshell, listening to and repeating conversational phrases is the backbone of the best method. Go over the same things until you know them well, and then review them later that day, the next day, the next week, and later. Build up a vocabulary and a basic sense of grammar by doing this. Make it fun for yourself. Listen to Spanish music, online videos, or TV shows. If possible, practice your Spanish with a native speaker.

I could write an article on each one of these points and over time, I will.

Maybe I’ll send my friend the link to this page. I bet she could change her idea that she’s no good at languages.
